The Great Gatsby
Read whilst in New York and I realise that it's been a while since I last read it. Interesting to now know some of the places mentioned and we're staying ten blocks from the bridge that they use to drive into New York. A sorry tale in many ways of privilege and selfishness, mingled with obsession and yearning for something that is unobtainable. Brilliantly written and encapsulates the hedonism of the Roaring Twenties with some reference to darker views on race and class origin that became prevalent in the 30s. I hope that we are not repeating the same a century later. The narrator is in involved in the various intrigues but also apart from them and so can narrate with detachment. It ends with him leaving New York seeing the shallowness of the people he's been involved with but also their tragedy. Very readable.
